Penalties for Prostitution in WA

Charges of prostitution are very serious and can be considered a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the circumstances. You could face significant jail time and fines in addition to having a criminal record. You need an aggressive Kitsap County criminal defense lawyer to argue on your behalf and keep your record clean. Make sure you call our firm as soon as you are charged!

Washington is forceful in punishing those convicted of prostitution. However, the state laws do create a challenge for the prosecution as well. They must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you have taken part in acts of prostitution. Washington law defines this as engaging, agreeing, or offering to engage in sexual conduct with another person in return for some exchange or fee.

Penalties for prostitution crimes can include the following:

  • Up to 180 days in jail and $500 in fines for a misdemeanor
  • 10 years in jail and $20,000 in fines for coercing an individual into prostitution
  • 5 years in prison and $10,000 in fines for pimping
  • 90 days in jail and $1,000 in fines for prostitution in restricted areas (near schools, playgrounds, etc.)

Further, any building used by prostitutes can be deemed a public nuisance and the property owner can be charged with conducting or maintaining a public nuisance. This carries a penalty of $500 for a first offense, closure of the premises from 5 to 35 days per conviction, or up to 180 days in jail.

Let Us Fight Your Charges

Many times when a person is charged with prostitution or patronizing a prostitute, it is a simple mistake. It is often the case that there is insufficient evidence to prove a person participated in prostitution. If there was not a definite agreement between the parties, a defense lawyer can come in and fight to get the charges dropped.
